I am notorious for not switching off. Every holiday or short break I’ve had, I’ve always stayed connected to what’s going on at work and It’s never really phased me, it’s just part of who I am. Recently though, I took a trip to Europe and decided (for the first time in 5 years) to disconnect completely for part of the trip. Initially, the anxiety of not knowing what was going on was intense. But after a couple of days, I actually really started enjoying the disconnection and I started enjoying just BEING in the moment.
While there were some periods where I fell back into old habits and checked in from time to time, for the most part, I made the extra effort to really take in my surroundings and just enjoy it. And WOW, did it really have an effect on the way I felt when I returned. I returned 100 times more refreshed, energised and ready to take on the world.
So what I learnt from his experience- it’s OK to be a workaholic and stay in the loop, because after all, it means you love your job. But don’t forget about YOU, take some time to disconnect and just be in the moment. Whether it’s a holiday or even just a yoga class, make sure you take some time out every now and then to focus on you and leave the online world behind.
The world will not blow up (well hopefully) and life will go on!
