How to Have a Successful Day

We are all susceptible to moments of procrastination and unproductivity. Having said that, it’s likely that it is not something that your boss praises you for and in the end, you’re only slowing down the progress of your day. Towards the 5.00pm mark, you might be hit with a wall of panic and regret that you just didn’t get your task list done. Never fear, because I’ve got a few solutions for you that will help set your day up for a successful one, first thing in the morning.

1. Wake up early

Several studies have linked early risers with successful people. Christopher Randler, Harvard Biologist, found in 2008 that early risers are generally more proactive [1]. As a once late-morning sleeper, I can vouch that it is possible to train yourself to become a morning person (even when you just don’t think it is possible). Just make sure to get to bed earlier and aim for eight hours of uninterrupted sleep. Don’t ruin your progress on the weekend and try to stick to the same timing. Persistence is key.

2. Exercise

We all know the benefits of exercise – but have you tried it for one week straight, every single morning? You don’t need to hit the gym or get to a 4.00am class if that’s not your thing. Just wake up half an hour earlier and go for a 30 minute walk on an empty stomach. It will help you to clear the mind and wake up the body. Regular exercise is beneficial for both your happiness and physical health. It will give you a burst of energy for the day and help to regulate your sleep patterns.

3. Eat breakfast

Let me just repeat what you were told as a child – “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”. It’s true that eating breakfast will help to regulate your metabolism and keep cravings at bay later on. It will also aid in memory, concentration and focus. Why is this related to success you may ask? Let me ask you this. How can you be successful if you’re hungry all day long?

4. Stay positive

Gratitude – you may have heard the concept before. Before you quickly respond with something along the lines of, “how lame”, humour me and give it a try. You’ll be surprised how much positive thinking can alter your state of mind and in turn, your day. I keep a note pad on the bedside table. Upon waking, I jot down three things for which I am grateful. It can be absolutely anything, big or small, there are no rules. You might be grateful for the mango smoothie you’re about to devour for breakfast. That’s fine. Just be grateful. Please note, I am not a medical professional, and you should always seek advice from your doctor or practitioner before embarking on any new health routine. The information above is simply an account of practices that I have personally found to be helpful. References:
