The benefits of finding a temp job

Grace Hayes-Rosario • October 17, 2022

Temporary work is a great way to develop your skills, maintain industry knowledge and gain experience working in varied sectors.

Temping, contract and casual work is increasingly common in the modern workforce. Below are just some of the many benefits of working as a temp!

Build your network
Temporary work allows you to build your professional network, with exposure to new managers and teams. Leaving a lasting impression on decision-makers can bode well for your long-term career aspirations.  Should a vacancy at their company arise, you’ll have an advantage over other candidates thanks to the time you put into building relationships.

TIP: Use temporary assignments to build workplace relationships through commitment, reliability, and work ethic. Remember your colleagues or stakeholders may be potential references, mentors or future employers!

Learn new skills
Enjoying the flexibility of temporary employment will give you the opportunity to learn new skills or processes and understand software programs you may not have been exposed to previously. With each assignment, you will be presented with new challenges, a new work environment and the ability to grow which will all aid you in your search for future employment.

TIP: Update your resume with the different skills and responsibilities you have gained in all of your temporary assignments to ensure your resume is up to date and relevant when hiring managers review it.

Flexibility
Do you have commitments outside of work such as family or study? Are you on a working holiday visa? If so, temporary work may be the right thing for you!

Temping is an opportunity to gain flexible employment that works for you and your lifestyle. Some temporary roles are as short as one day and as long as fulltime ongoing, with potential for permanency down the track.

TIP: In exchange for a recruiter’s continued, ongoing support, we expect that candidates honour the commitments they make at the beginning of the temporary assignment and treat their work assignments as if they were permanent positions.

Close career gaps
Taking on a temporary contract will immediately allow you to close any gaps on your resume. Employers and recruiters will see that you are keeping your skills current and that you are open to taking on new responsibilities and challenges.

TIP: If you are temping through recruitment agencies, any positive feedback received regarding your temporary contract and performance will encourage your recruiter to search for permanent opportunities for you!

The flexibility and variety that temp work offers, alongside the ability to increase skills and professional and personal networks make temporary employment an enticing option that should be considered by all candidates!
